A Refined Tully-Fisher Relationship and a New Scaling Law for Galaxy Discs

چکیده

We show how the hypothesis that galaxy discs conform to self-similar dynamics leads to the identification of an annular region of the optical disc which is such that, corresponding to the Tully-Fisher scaling law defined on the exterior annular boundary, there is a similar scaling law defined on the interior annular boundary. This result is confirmed at the level of statistical certainty over several large ORC samples. Furthermore, the same analysis provides insight into the uncertainties associated with the “best” way of defining Vmax, the rotation velocity used for the Tully-Fisher scaling law and Rmax, the galaxy radius at which Vmax is measured. Finally, as a direct consequence, we are led to a refined Tully-Fisher law which is largely insensitive to the means by which a galaxy’s rotation velocity is defined.

A Refined Tully-Fisher Relationship and New Scaling Laws for Galaxy Discs

We show how the hypothesis that galaxy discs conform to self-similar dynamics leads to an objective identification, in the data, of an annular region of the optical disc which is such that, corresponding to the classical TullyFisher and Freeman scaling laws defined on the exterior annular boundary, there are similar scaling laws defined on the interior annular boundary. This result is confirmed...

Dark Halo and Disk Galaxy Scaling Laws

I highlight recent progress in our understanding of the origin of disk galaxy scaling laws in a hierarchically clustering universe. Numerical simulations of galaxy formation in Cold Dark Matter (CDM) dominated universes indicate that the slope and scatter of the I-band Tully-Fisher (TF) relation are well reproduced in this model, although not, as proposed in recent work, because of the cosmolog...

The Cosmological Origin of Disk Galaxy Scaling Laws

We discuss possible origins of scaling laws relating structural properties of disk galaxies within the context of hierarchically clustering theories of galaxy formation. Using gasdynamical simulations that incorporate the effects of star formation we illustrate these global trends and highlight the difficulties faced by models that envision disk galaxies as the final outcome of a hierarchical s...

Galaxy Scaling Relations as a Result of Secular Evolution

The secular evolution process which slowly transforms the morphology of a given galaxy over its lifetime through mostly internal dynamical mechanisms could naturally account for most of the observed properties of physical galaxies (Zhang 2003a). As an emerging paradigm for galaxy evolution, its dynamical foundations had been established in the past few years (Zhang 1996, 1998, 1999). In this pa...

Effects of galaxy interaction on the Tully - Fisher relation : CO vs H I linewidths

We investigate effects of galaxy-galaxy interaction on the Tully-Fisher relation. The HI linewidth in interacting galaxies is significantly broader than the CO linewidth, and the HI to CO linewidth ratio is proportional to the strength of interaction. This provides different distances to galaxies measured by the Tully-Fisher relation with the CO and HI linewidths. Distances derived from the HI ...
